The 10 Commandments of Euchre

Euchre players have been handing down commandments for generations. Here are ours: ten habits that win more hands.

  1. Thou shalt count to seven.
There are seven trump. Know how many are left before you lead or ruff.
  2. Thou shalt not trump thy partner's ace.
If your partner already has the trick, throw your lowest card and keep your trump for later.
  3. Thou shalt lead trump when thy team hath made it.
Pull the defenders' trump so your aces and kings can take tricks.
  4. Thou shalt not call trump on hope alone.
Two small trump and a prayer gets you euchred. A euchre costs 2 points; passing costs nothing.
  5. Thou shalt honor thy partner's call.
They named that suit for a reason. Lead it back to them when you can.
  6. Thou shalt follow suit, and the left bower is not its printed suit.
A renege costs the hand. The jack of the same color belongs to trump.
  7. Thou shalt discard to a void.
As dealer, throw your lone card in a suit so you can trump it later.
  8. Thou shalt go alone when the hand is there.
Both bowers and the ace usually mean 4 points. Don't settle for 2.
  9. Thou shalt watch the turned-down card.
It tells you what the dealer didn't want and where the bowers might be.
  10. Thou shalt not talk across the table.
No signals, no sighs, no "I've got nothing." Let the cards do the talking.

Each of these is explained in more depth in our strategy guide.
